There are few days that make me as happy as today.
My kids birthday, my wedding aniversary, Christmas morning and the 4th of July are all at the top.
But then, there is opening day.
The perfect sport. It ends, when it ends. Time does not exist in baseball. I love everything about it. The smell of the grass. The color of the sky. The boxscore. The memories. The history.
Gazing into my crystal ball, I am ready to reveal my picks for the 2009 MLB season.
American League West
Rangers will go 162-0...then lose 4 straight to the Yankees in the playoffs.
Well, maybe not this season. Although continuing to improve, you just can't win in the heat of Texas. We will still be over .500 this season and have a better record than the Astros but will be a distant second to the AL West winners, the L.A. Angels
American League Central
Does it really matter?
I'm going with the Twins, simply because I caught a game in the Metrodome last season and thought it was cool.
American League East
What has become the hottest league in all of baseball (it used to be the AL West), the AL East will have 3 legit playoff teams. Sorry Rays.
The SAWX will take the regular season with the Yankees 4 games behind them. It will be a battle, since the Yankees dropped more than the AIG bailout on free agents this year.
American League Champions
Boston Red Sox
National League West
With the best young pitching staff in the division, the nod goes the the Dodgers. Young being the operative word. If they can keep it together, they may be good for a while. And hey, they have Manny! That has to be worth 10-12 wins itself?!
National League Central
See (AL Central)
I don't think it really matters here either. The Cubs showed last year how having the best regular season record means nothing. I think they repeat as Central champs...but it won't matter.
National League East
Although the Phillies were the World Champs last year, it will be short lived. Although I believe Philadelphia will make it interesting with a wild card birth, it's the Mets year. They will ride Johan Santana all the way to the pennant.
National League Champions
New York Mets
World Series Champions
Boston Red Sox
With the best 15 man pitching staff in the game, it will be party time in Beantown come October.
The only question will be will they Celtics and the Patriots join them?

I don't keep up with baseball
that much, almost not at all but i don't think that sounds right.
Wow! Mr. Perry you really are a true baseball fan...know other teacher that i have had in my years of school has had baseball on during class. Im more of a basketball fan but i can dig the baseball thing. Anyways im really interested on seeing how your picks turn out. Good Luck with that.
Well I think some of your picks may be right but not all i do think Boston will go all the way and win although the Celtics or Patriots won't but i think you have a great insight into the baseball world but Yankees wont go far in the pennant races.
WOOT!! i love baseball, im not too sure wat teams are going to go yet but i think that we are going to be in for a good season this year!
GO RED SOCKS!!!!
I don't really follow baseball, but a few of your picks I disagree with.
You can't ride Johan if your bull pen blows as many games as they did last year. I know they took steps to improve their bullpen, but your not going first to last in one year. Even if their bull pen is phenomenal are you going to forget how the Mets' have collapsed the last two years?
The philes actually show some interest in playing, and in a 165 game regular season that's what really matters , don't have to deal with lazy and racist players, and have an above average roster.
In the AL east you are picking the Yankees to win, but the red socks to win the wild card and the AL championship? It's going to be Rays repeating their AL east pennant victory. Followed by Boston. With the New York QQ (QQ = huge eyes with tears flowing from them) reaching all time highs after a huge off season spending spree. CC has never been good early on. After the Yankees spent that much money on him the New York media and fans will eat him alive if he doesn't start out as a clear Cy Young favorite. You can't add 20 (I think that was how far they were out) regular season wins by adding 3 players to a nucleus of old players more worried about their bank account then winning. They also lost A-Rod for a few months. Unless the rest of the team starts pulling their wight the Yankees are going to be missing out again.
Also how can a team that is one year out of the best NL record NOT matter?
its americas favorite past time and whats not to love! it was sad to gear that the angels pitcher at the young age of 22 died yesterday from a drunk driver but the game must go on. you do however have some good picks. gotta love them boys of summer! :-)
wow i didnt know that you were in to all that baseball stuff!! Umm i really dont knw anything about the teams but i hope the red socks win it all and if not the rangers or yankees.
As I said in class last monday your picks are crazy. However they are so crazy they just might work. Moreover i dont like either of the teams that u picked to end it all so that could be a part of why i think your picks to be so crazy.
I would have to disagree Mr.Perry.
haha. The Yankees have a 95% chance to the World series due to the improvement of the pitching staff and other areas short on talent. My second pick would be the Rays because thier young, alot of new talent and play fairly well together [more confidence would boost thier moral towards the end of the season]. Lastly i would go with Angels because of the talent and i have faith that their pitching staff will break open and show true potenital talent throughout the season. But thats just my opinion. Who knows??? We will see :)
