A GERMAN woman mauled by three polar bears after she leapt into the moat surrounding their pen at a Berlin zoo was apparently suicidal after a string of setbacks, a newspaper reports.
The daily Bild reported today that Sandy K, 32, who is still in intensive care after the attack, went to the zoo alone on Friday while her eight-year-old daughter spent the Easter holiday weekend with her father, Sandy's estranged partner Lars.
Sandy had long had financial problems and in February, the electricity was cut off to her flat, which she had been lighting since then with candles.
"She occasionally came over with the kettle so she could heat up her water," a neighbour told Bild.
In the summer of 2007, she nearly lost her apartment due to rent arrears and mounting debts from internet shopping and was threatened with jail time unless she started paying them off.
Sandy had evidently been alone since Lars, whom she met during her studies, left her four years ago.
"She had been studying too long and I was working too much. We lost our love," Lars told Bild.The mauling made front page news, in part due to the celebrity of the polar bears at Berlin Zoo.
They shot to global fame in 2007 after the birth of the cub Knut, which was abandoned by its mother and survived only by being fed from baby bottles by a keeper.
Neither Knut nor his mother was involved in Friday's attack.

this is hilarious i mean i know it is sad that she tried to kill herself but why with polar bears? isnt there much easier less painful ways. i think that she just needs to get over her problems like everyone else in the world does. she also needs to have her custody of the kid taken away if she doesnt have electricity at her flat.
Poor lady. She should have not jumped in with the polar bears...she should have just got into the lions cage while they were hungry if she wanted to committ suicide. Even then she shouldn't have been trying to kill herself at a zoo with all the childrens around and it was easter weekend, that lady must really have some serious issues. Their is always a better way to do things and it sounds to me like she was just giving up.

Now this has really got to suck. Lifes going bad, so lets jump in the pit with some polar bears... Life really couldn't have been that terrible. Yeah, we all have problems but we all should just move on in life.
This reminds me of The Happening, where the guy gets ripped apart by lions. Anyway. Maybe this lady should stop shopping incessantly on the internet and pay her power bill. That's just me. And maybe she should commit suicide in a less attention-getting way like the other 99% of suicidal people in the world. You and the lady who got her face ripped off by the chimp are distracting news time and redirecting my important and touching blog entries from important issues.
That's pretty sad. I think it is a little bit of a creative suicide though. I think it is kinda odd that she tried to die by doing something that is going to be publicized so openly. Look at this blog for example. People all over the world are talking about this thing. Why would she want to be so publicly criticized?
You would think that people would have more common sense than to jump into a moat at a zoo. if you did you are asking to be attacked.
If this lady had really wanted to commit suicide, I'm sure there are easier ways of doing it, not that I support it at all...I just think it wasn't just a suicide attempt but she wanted he 15 of fame before she died. It is really hard to believe that something as trivial ad money can lead someone to do that, especially when there is a child involved, what a role model! I do, however think it is an interesting way to go...after all I don't know of anyone else that has tried death by polar bear.
You know your life sucks, when you jump into a pit of polar bears to try and committ suicide. Haha wow.. this lady is pretty stupid. Who wakes up and says to themselve " I hate my life, let me just go to the zoo, and jump into the polar bear exhibit at the local zoo". I dont even know how she survived... lucky woman.

Really? REALLY? I feel bad for this woman, but when you jump into the polar bear exhibit, it's kinda what you get. No matter how cute and cuddly a polar bear might seem, they are still a BEAR and will RIP YOUR FACE OFF. Also, the zoo should start screening people at the entrance psychologically to see if they are stable enough to NOT jump in the polar bear exhibit. Come on!
WOW!!! That is sad. If i were to commit suicide I would do something that would kill me faster. I feel sorry fo her 8 year old daughter who is going to have to live with being "the daughter of the lady who tried to kill herself by a polar bear attack" for the rest of her life.

Guess this lady found a new way to try to commit suiside...though she's pretty crazy to jump in with polar bears. Don't think anyone would jump in there and not expect to be attacked.

I honestly have NO sympathy for this woman. If her debts were gathering up for some other reason than INTERNET SHOPPING then I would be a bit more sympathetic to the situation. But when you jump into a polar bear exhibit, you have to expect the worst
I'm sorry, but this story makes me laugh. I mean, it's sad all her issues and stuff, but I don't think I've ever heard of anyone attempting suicide by leaping into a polar bears' exhibit. I hope the woman makes a full recovery and gets her life back on track for her sake as well as her daughters. Anyway, nice tidbit about the celebrity cub at the end. XP
This lady needs seriously counseling. Everybody is dealing with hard times right now. That doesn't mean you have to kill yourself.
I think that lady is pretty crazy. I'm pretty sure she could have gotten help. There are so many ways to find help. Doing what she do was just unnecessary. I think she just wanted attention. She should have left those animals alone.
That's terrible... who would want to commit suicide by being mauled by a polar bear? This is just a really sad and depressing story, especially since her medical bills will probably not help her financial situation...
i have never heard of someone wanting to commit suicide by jumping into an exhibit of polar bears. this lady must have been in deeper debt than the article is saying because this just sounds unreal. maby the setbacks that the article mentions are her past suicidal attempts.
This is so sad. First the fact that she tried to do this, and also she has a daughter think about she is going to feel knowing that her mother felt she could not handle life any more i hope she does not die.

Sadly to say, I laughed at this :( That lady should have just found a less weird way of suicide but then again why commit it? I think she should just get a job and pay her debts(it was her own fault). I'm glad Knut nor his mother was involved in Friday's attack. :)

wow..that's sad. It's sad to know that someone would be upset enough to jump into a pit of polar bears. polar bears are known to be cute and cuddly..WRONG.
What the heck!?!?!?! seriously if she really wanted to die she would have done it some other way not by jumping into polar bear pin!!!! but i gotta give her props for having the guts to do it.
