Daily RCP Polls

Real Clear Politics has a great website. Many of the articles you see here come from their site.

Among other things, they also have several polls of interest.

RCP takes many (sometimes 30 or more) and then averages them to get a real sense of the overall polling. Understand, specific polls are simple snapshots. Averaging many of them gives you a larger picture.

We are now 34 days away from the election. I will be placing the RCP poll here for you to see:

National Overall Poll:

Obama +4.8%

Swing State Polls:

Ohio - Obama +2.2 voted for Bush in 2000 & 2004

Florida - Obama +1.4 voted for Bush in 2000(?) & 2004

Nevada - McCain +1.7 voted for Bush in 2000 & 2004

New Hampshire - Obama +1.3 voted for Bush in 2000 & Kerry in 2004

Virginia - Obama +3.0 voted for Bush in 2000 & 2004

North Carolina - Obama +0.7 voted for Bush in 2000 & 2004

Wisconsin - Obama +3.8 voted for Gore in 2000 & Kerry in 2004

Minnesota - Obama +2.8 voted for Gore in 2000 & Kerry in 2004

Missouri - McCain +3.2 voted for Bush in 2000 & 2004

Indiana - McCain +2.4 voted for Bush in 2000 & 2004

So why do you think the politicians (even though they deny it when they are losing) follow polls every day?

What's the importance?

I believe they follow polls for the obvious reason such as curiosity and to know where they have to work harder to win. The polls for the candidates are like statistics for football players they don’t need to know them but it determines how they should play their game and how to improve.
The importance of the polls makes differences of how the candidates should make their next move and what subjects they should talk about. I believe that the polls make a big difference but they don’t determine outcomes.

I think politicians follow polls becaus it shows them what kind of impact they are having on the voters. It shows them what issues they need to address, and what they need to plan around to get more support. Plus they probly like to know how they're maching up with the other politicians they're running against.

I believe they follow the polls for obvious reasons. Such as, seeing if they are losing or winning, and to see by how much. If they do it often enough they can tell what the various ups and downs were caused by, and how to capitalize on it.

I believe politicians follow polls, because it shows weather they are winning or loosing
and how much harder they have to work to win or what they need to do in order to win.
I think the importance of it is for the politicians to see whats going to happen next or what are the outcomes of them and the other politicians they are running against going to be.

Politicians want to know where they stand in the race. They want to know if they got a lead on their opponent because of something they said or did. They also want to see who in the swing states they're appealing to and focus their energy on keeping them and getting new supporters. It is important to them because it shows them what issues they need to adress and what they should stay away from.
It kind of seems like the polls might be misleading though because not everyone who is registered to vote in the election votes in polls every day.
